SOME TOURISTS HAVE ASKED...

Gracias!

Cuneo valleys, flowers and castles

Cuneo’s valleys, flowers and castles.

Mountains, museums, agritourism and food and wine itineraries.

The extreme southwest of Piedmont finds us in the heart of the province of Cuneo, where the Alps form a sensational backdrop to towns and castles lying between the plain and hills. Once we begin to climb up from the valleys, there is no lack of resorts and ski facilities in the area, for years now the destination of large numbers of visitors to the mountains, both in winter and summer.
If mountain tourism is an undeniable asset for the whole province of Cuneo, for some time now efforts have been made to enhance the possibilities available to visitors by developing the museums, agritourism accommodation and food and wine routes, thanks to the efforts of government agencies and the local inhabitants. An example of this approach is Cuneo’s "Festival of the Mountain", an event devoted to the issues and problems of the Alpine valleys aimed at bringing together workers in the tourist sector and visitors to the mountains. The festival comes at a time of rediscovered dynamism in the area, especially around Cuneo, with partnerships and agreements strengthening cooperation with the French, with regard to the mountains and the historical and environmental heritage preserved in the valleys and the slopes. During the week important authors and scholars in alpine matters will take part in meetings to discuss many subjects: the wildlife situation (one meeting is devoted to the return of the wolf to these areas), the recovery of the old Alpine military roads, caving activities and the heritage of parks such as the Pesio and Tanaro Valley Park and the Maritime Alps Nature Park. As well as meetings, there will also be film and theatre events, also on the themes of the mountains and their inhabitants (both men and animals), which are often a little forgotten compared with the country’s other areas and destinations.

Not far from Cuneo, another event is devoted to one of the many treasures of this area: its flora. Plants and flowers are the focus of a show held at the Roccolo Castle, a complex built in the nineteenth century on the hills of Busca, a town located a few minutes from the Piedmont capital. The fifth edition of 'Flora', the plant and flower show, will welcome you in the castle’s fascinating environment, among trees, tunnels, fountains, terraces and a pond with a panoramic view. The show is open to Italian and foreign exhibitors, who will present their collections of plants and flowers alongside products for flower-growing, such as seeds, bulbs, small tools, gardening equipment and outdoor furniture. During the two days gardening classes and lectures will be held, as well as guided tours of the castle and Roccolo Park, and educational activities on the subject of gardens.
