Surroundings
The Etruscan Riviera, a strip of land with soft hills on one side, and the beautiful coastal beaches on the other, is one of the most interesting areas in Northern Maremma.
Suvereto, Campiglia Marittima, Sassetta, Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri, the mediaeval towns and their thousand year old castles, are surrounded by lines of cypress trees and aromatic vineyards.
The archaeological sites of Populonia and the Gulf of Baratti are on the coast, and boast necropolis that are unique in their kind.
The countryside of Riotorto unfolds harmoniously between the Parks of the Cornia Valley and the best of the beaches of the Gulf of Follonica. The Island of Elba is accessible by ferry in an hour from Piombino and the Thermal waters of Caldana are 8kms. away in Venturina.
The Cornia Valley is famous for the beaches in San Vincenzo and for its DOC (origin guaranteed) wines. The extra virgin olive oil is first quality. The Wine Trail passes through this area, and the main municipalities have been recognised for their ability to provide Slow Food. They are also recognised as wine and oil Centres, having been presented with the blue and orange flag representing their excellence in food and wine.
