Guide to vacation in Reggio Emilia
Discover Reggio Emilia - Guide to vacation in Reggio Emilia

An important centre of both commerce and agriculture, Reggio Emilia is located on the ancient Via Aemilia. Reggio Emilia has Roman origins, in the medieval period it was a self-governing municipality, then from 1409 to 1860 it became, like Modena, part of the duchy of Este.
Reggio Emilia is the city of the Italian flag. It was in this city that the ‘Tricolore’ was created on 7th January 1797. The room in which it was created (Sala del Tricolore) is now the headquarters of the Local Council.

Next to the Sala del Tricolore you can visit the Museum of the Tricolore, with sections devoted to the Reggiana Republic, the Cispadana Republic, the Cisalpine Republic and the Italian Republic at the Restoration.
Also interesting is the Wine Museum, which houses ancient equipment for wine production. Among the monuments of greatest interest is the Parmeggiani Gallery with its collections of weapons, gold works, costumes and textiles, wooden furniture, antique paintings, and the paintings of Cesare Detti and Ignacio Leon Y Escosura.

Do not miss a visit to the Basilica of the Blessed Virgin of Ghiara and the Church of S. Prospero.
Food enthusiasts the world over will appreciate the typical products of the Reggio Emilia province: Parmesan cheese, Lambrusco wine and balsamic vinegar.
Parmesan cheese is one of Italy’s protected products.
Balsamic vinegar is a delicacy whose exact origin is unknown, but which adds flavour to many Emilian dishes.
In the province of Reggio Emilia, visit Canossa, where Countess Matilda’s castle is located. The founding of the castle is attributed to Adalberto Atto of Canossa, but it was Countess Matilda who brought fame to this monument.
