Discover La Spezia - Guide to vacation in La Spezia

La Spezia is a coast city located to the east of Genoa.
La Spezia is a very lively city that maintains its industrial traditions along with naval shipbuilding.
Varese Ligure has earned the nickname ‘Organic Valley’ for its care in producing high quality products that respect the environment. Visitors will notice the town’s circular shape. Varese Ligure actually consists of two villages, one elongated, the other round. The circular town was founded by powerful Genoa to exploit the areas furthest from the coast. Varese Ligure was to be a centre of commerce and trade, and the circular arrangement of the houses was designed for the better defence of its town centre. The Italian Touring Club considers it to be one of the most beautiful towns in Italy.

Close to the bay of La Spezia is the old town of Lerici, which overlooks a small bay, also called the ‘Gulf of Poets’. Lerici is dominated by its thirteenth-century castle, now home to an excellent Geo-Palaeontology Museum. That Dante visited Lerici may not be historically documented, but it is supported by many scholars due to the powerful quote in Canto III of Purgatory.
Tellaro near Lerici has a beautiful square filled ancient towers and arcades, the latter a reminder of its past importance as a trading centre.

In 1995 the Regional Montemarcello Magra Nature Park was founded from the fusion of the Montemarcello protected area with the Magra River Park.
Trails are well marked within the park, and passing through an area dotted with ancient olive trees you will reach the town of Barbazzano. Or instead, from Tellaro you can reach the ‘Land of the Giants’. Besides their scenic beauty these paths offer sensational views, especially the routes way above the sea.
