Guide to vacation in Enna
Discover Enna - Guide to vacation in Enna

Enna is known as Sicily’s belvedere due to its panoramic position overlooking the Dittaino Valley, but it is also Sicily’s centre. Scholars have in fact determined the heart of Sicily as being in the Enna province.
Enna has very ancient origins, which is evident from the monuments in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, from the beautiful Via Roma, and from its squares and Cathedral. The Alessi Museum is located opposite the Cathedral and houses important works in gold as well as other precious objects, bronzes, ceramics and coins.

Close to Enna is the Lombardia Castle, one of the most important castles in Sicily. The irregular-shaped castle has six of its former twenty towers still standing. There are three courtyards inside the castle, one of which is used as an open-air theatre. The castle also contains the remains of the home of Frederick III of Aragon.

Enna, the ‘Belvedere of Sicily’ is also called ‘the province of the lakes’. Lake Pergusa, now the only natural lake in Sicily, is perfectly circular in shape and was the scene of historic events in ancient times. Legend claims it was the scene of Pluto’s abduction of Prosperina. This wonderful lake is surrounded by a hilly landscape reaching a height of eight hundred metres. Most of the bird species found in Sicily live in the area of the lake and the Pergusina Basin, some of which are rare species, such as the Sicilian Partridge and Swamp Falcon. The flora around the lake is abundant, and this area of Sicily as a whole is justifiably one of the most appreciated by nature lovers.
