Rising among the Chianti hills, surrounded by olives, vines and ancient woodland, is the thirteenth century Castello di Cafaggio.
It is just 12km from Florence yet in a world of its own. Here Giacomo Puccini, a close friend of its aristocratic owners, used to hunt in the extensive woodlands.
The Agriturismo is in a farmhouse next to the Castle. Its four apartments, double bedroom and the detached cottage retain all the appeal of an old country house. As a guest, your day may start with breakfast in the elegant Liberty-style dining room in the Castle.

Later, in the Castle's kitchen garden, amongst lemon and almond trees and sweet smelling herbs, you can enjoy the large swimming pool which looks out over a breathtaking view. Sometimes there are activities organised in the Castle, such as oil tastings in the old olive press, cookery and decoration courses, as well as receptions and concerts.
At the end of the day you may admire one of the stunning sunsets that are often to be seen from the agriturismo's courtyard. Here a barbecue is available so guests can cook outside and get to taste the Estate's own products, amongst which is the award winning Cafaggio extra virgin olive.

Where we are
A few kilometres from the Castello di Cafaggio lies the highway 222 which goes to Siena, passing through gentle hills and taking in castles, badie (old monasteries), ancient stone farm houses and many small restaurants with pretty outside terraces.
The first castle we encounter on this road is the Castello di Vicchiomaggio, then there is Castello di Uzzano which is just outside the town of Greve.

Before entering Greve, with its handsome square where a market is held every Saturday, we turn left and head for Montefioralle, a tiny, beautiful medieval hamlet.
Once back on the highway, heading for Siena, we will come across other wonderful castles and monasteries such as Castello di Vignamaggio, Castello di Volpaia, Castello di Meleto, Castello di Brolio, Badia a Passignano and Badia a Coltibuono

Continuing along the road, we will find some of the most important wineries of the Chianti which are world famous, and where it is possible to stop and taste their wine.
Finally we arrive at Siena - a unique moment.
The old Cassia (Roman road) which goes to Rome will be another source of discoveries and surprises.
There are the Crete Senesi, Monteriggioni, San Gimignano, Volterra, Certaldo and many other lesser known villages, where sometimes just a church, a square or an old town hall give a glimpse into the past. Visiting these places which are so rich in history and beauty is the stuff of unforgettable memories.
And everything is so close!

Florence is just 12 km away and is easy to reach by a direct bus, which passes about every 30 minutes, and which takes approximately half hour to reach the central station. The closest bus stop is just 500 metres from the Castle.
The A1 Austrostrada (highway) is just 6 km distant and Arezzo, Pisa, Lucca and the coast can be reached in around an hour by car.
Nearby there is also the prestigious 18 hole golf course of Golf Club Ugolino (6 km), an equestrian centre (2 km) and a sports centre (6km).
Bikes can be rented at the Castle, and wine tours and guided tours to Florence and other towns can be organised on request.

Siena (61 km)
The world famous central square, Piazza del Campo, is the home in July and August to the Palio horse race. In the perfectly preserved medieval town centre you will discover the Duomo, the Palazzo Comunale with its distinctive tower, Torre del Mangia, as well as works of art by great sculptors and painters on every corner.

Arezzo (80 km)
Home to the famous Antiques Market which takes place in the handsome Piazza Grande on the first Saturday and Sunday of every month. Works by Piero della Francesca and Andrea della Robbia are to be seen in the Duomo. Also worth a visit are the Museum of Medieval Art, the church of San Francesco, the Casa Vasari and the Archaeological Museum.

Lucca (80 km)
It is possible to walk the entire 4km of ancient city walls which ring Lucca. Maria Luisa da Borbone created this elegant walk, adding tall trees to either side. Once inside the city walls you will find outstandingly attractive churches, palaces, streets and lanes. Also worth a visit are the church of Ilaria del Carretto and the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro. Every third weekend in the month there is an Antiques Market.

Pisa (90 km)
The Leaning Tower is not to be missed. It is to be found in the beautiful Piazza dei Miracoli with the Baptistery and the Duomo. The Museum of Roman Ships is also interesting.

Pistoia (50 km)
Close to Florence and just an hour's drive from the Abetone, the famous sky resort of the Tosco-Emiliano Appenines, this delightful little city is rich in history. Worth visiting are the Cathedral of San Zeno, the Baptistery and the Basilica of the Madonna dell'Umiltà, as well as Duomo square and the Duomo itself.

Collodi (58 km) : visit the Pinocchio theme park

Torre del Lago (100 km): as well as the beautiful lake, visit the house of Giacomo Puccini

Viareggio (108 km): famous for its long beach of fine sand as well as the Carnival with procession of allegorical floats.
