According to tradition, Benevento was founded either by Diomedes or Auson, a son of Ulysses and Circe. It is certainly a very ancient city with historical references from before the Samnite Wars.
Benevento was a very powerful city in ancient times; even the Romans were afraid of tackling it. Benevento later became a crucial point for trade between the Orient and the Western World. Many monuments attest to Benevento’s importance, such as the Leproso Bridge and Trajan’s Arch.
Benevento retains many old farming traditions and customs, one of which is the traditional country costume. The outfit comprises a linen cloth worn on the head, a necklace of gold or coral balls covering the throat and a cloth bodice with ribbons and large buttons.
Besides leaving a cultural mark, tradition has also produced excellent wines in this area, such as Aglianico del Taburno, Solopaca, and Sant'Agata dei Goti.
In the Benevento province, visit Telese with its Roman remains. Take a walk through the town of Sant'Agata de' Goti. The many archaeological remains found in the area and housed in the province’s museums testify to its Roman origins.
Lovers of nature trails can follow the Gole di Lavelle. One of the tracks follows a very ancient mule path that was once of major importance to the peoples of the valleys.
At Montesarchio of Samnite origin, visit the castle, a strategic landmark in the history of these lands. Despite later modifications it remains one of the most important examples of military architecture in the Campania region.
