TRIESTE | FRIULI VENEZIA GIULIA

Discover Trieste

Guide to vacation in Trieste
Discover Trieste - Guide to vacation in Trieste

Trieste is a cosmopolitan city known from historical times for the importance of its trade. Trieste’s wealth is reflected in its port and Roman Theatre.
The heart of Trieste is the Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia. Many of the city’s architectural treasures surround this beautiful square: the eighteenth century inner city port on the Canal Grande, Palazzo Carciotti from the nineteenth century, the Pescheria, and the wonderful Revoltella Museum, originally Pasquale Revoltella’s private residence.

Trieste has also been the scene of important events, such as the foundation of The Generali and Lloyd Trieste insurance companies. Of a different and more romantic nature are two other Trieste historical events: both James Joyce’s Ulysses and Italo Svevo’s The Conscience of Zeno were written under the magical influence of the city.
Worth visiting are the medieval basilica of S. Giusto, the Castle walls and the ancient Arch of Riccardo (33 BC).

Not far from Trieste, you can visit Miramare, the promontory chosen by Maximilian of Hapsburg - Lorena for the construction of a wonderful residential castle.
On Mount Muliano lies the town of Muggia. Dominating Muggia Vecchia is its castle, erected between 1374 and 1399 on the spot where an ancient watchtower previously stood.
A fifteenth-century palazzo houses the small Archeological Museum, which contains artefacts from the earliest settlements in the area. Muggia Vecchia still retains parts of its old fortified centre.

Discover the Trieste countryside in the Rosandra Valley, an area of great environmental interest. The Rosandra Valley, a karst area lying partly in Slovenian territory, has been protected since 1996. Val Rosandra is populated by various species of animals due to the variety of its terrain. Many of the proposed routes through the Rosandra Valley can be taken throughout the year. While exploring this area, ask to hear the many legends that link it to Charlemagne and to the mysterious Princess Rosandra.
