Sondrio is one of the least populated provinces of Lombardy, with 21,978 inhabitants. Unlike Cremona, the territory of Sondrio is mainly mountainous interspersed with valleys.
The town of Sondrio is set between the Retiche Alps and the Orobie Pre-Alps, located in a strategic position between Italy and other countries. Due to its position it was often the target for expansion by other nations.
For a long period it was the fief of the De Capitanei family before passing to the Visconti, then the Grigioni. During this last period there were major clashes between the Valtellina Catholics and the Grigioni Protestants.
There are numerous artistic sites on the outskirts of Sondrio, such as the San Rocco church and Masegra Castle.
Many towns in the province of Sondrio are recommended as destinations for their beauty, but also for their "goodness". The entire province of Sondrio is surrounded by vineyards, which besides representing an important tradition for the province are also one of its main economic resources. Grumello, Inferno, Sassella and Valgella are among the most renowned varieties of local wine. The harvest, which involves most of the population, starts later than is usual in Italy due to the different climatic conditions.
Teglio in the province of Sondrio has the best vineyards and apple orchards in the Valtellina. Follow the “Wine and Flavours Route”. The Wine and Flavours Route runs at a height of 600 – 800m from Tirano to Sondrio, with Teglio in the middle. The route through nature and vineyards also allows you to visit the beautiful mountain castles such as those of Montagna and Tresivio.
