The provincial capital of Campobasso is a lovely old city whose picturesque centre is dominated by the Monforte Castle. Situated on the slopes of a hill, the old city of Campobasso has narrow streets, many of which are actually beautiful flights of steps.
The great Monforte Castle is situated at the highest part. The construction of the crenellated castle dates back to 1549. A short distance below the castle are two beautiful, thirteenth-century churches, San Giorgio and San Bartolomeo.
Museum enthusiasts will have a pleasant surprise in Campobasso: the Permanent Museum of the Crib. The museum is located in Piazza della Vittoria and on display are miniature cribs from all over the world.
Ferrazzano, a few kilometers from Campobasso, is surrounded by a beautiful pinewood. Visit the fifteenth-century castle; the parish church still retains its Romanesque entranceway.
Following directions for Larino you will come to Santa Maria della Strada. The Romanesque church has a beautiful facade adorned with reliefs.
A visit to Baranello means you can also see the Civic Museum with exhibits from every age, ivories, bronzes and Peruvian, Chinese and European majolica.
Together with about seventy other municipalities, including Isernia, Campobasso is part of the Tratturi Park of Molise. The ‘tratturi’ are pathways that were used by herds and flocks since proto-historic times.
During its period of maximum development, the network of tracks stretched from Aquila to Taranto, from the Adriatic coast to the slopes of the Matese Mountains, covering well over three thousand kilometres. The Tratturi Park of Molise is populated by wild boar, hares, badgers, owls, squirrels, dormice and many other species of animals.
