Discover Verona - Guide to vacation in Verona

Verona is an ancient city that was of great importance in Roman and medieval times as remaining artworks from those periods show.
Verona is one of Italy’s art cities most loved by visitors from many different places, who choose Piazza Brà as the focus of their visit to the city.
Piazza Brà contains the Town Hall, the Palazzo della Gran Guardia and the Maffeiano Museum. The undisputed jewel of Verona is the Arena. Next, visit ‘Juliet’s House’, continuing from there to the Piazza delle Erbe. In Piazza dei Signori, visit the Loggia del Consiglio and the Palazzo del Comune with the dei Lamberti Tower.

From 1262 to 1387 the Scala family governed Verona. The ‘Arche Scaligere’, the spectacular tombs of this family, are worth seeing.
The Cathedral of Verona contains a work by Titian, the Assumption; another great masterpiece is the Romanesque church of San Zeno Maggiore.

In the province of Verona, visit the picturesque town of Lazise, renowned as the first free municipality in Italy. The freedom was granted by Emperor Otto II and for its time gave considerable autonomy to the town. In Lazise, visit the sixteenth-century Venetian Customs House. At the Customs House they used to mix sheep’s urine with soil to produce gunpowder. Also visit the Parish Church, Porta Nuova, and take a walk along the lakeside.
Peschiera del Garda is located on the shores of Lake Garda. Peschiera del Garda had a military function, signs of which are everywhere in the city. Indeed the city welcomes visitors with its ramparts and ditches. Everything reflects the defence and might the town has shown during its long history. Inside the fortress you can see the ‘Knight of the Rock’, an artillery emplacement attached to the imposing Cantarana rampart.

Another important piece of military architecture is Fort Ardietti. It was built by Radetzky between 1853 and 1861 as part of an entrenched camp.
Nearby, visit the shrine of the Madonna del Frassino containing works by the local painter Paolo Farinati. Nature lovers can take a trip to the Laghetto del Frassino (Ash Lake) surrounded by reedbeds. Over forty species of birds live in this natural oasis.
In the lower part of Verona be sure to visit Villafranca di Verona, also created for defensive purposes.
