SOME TOURISTS HAVE ASKED...

Gracias!

We would like to stay in Tuscany in August. We are a couple In the late fifties from Norway and we are spending tree weeks travelling in Toscana. A nice place with good Italian food and wine. Aase and Helge.

Agritourism Assisi to reinvigorate the spirit

Whoever chooses to stay in an agritourism farm or a holiday home near Assisi in the province of Perugia knows they will discover a dimension that few towns in the whole of Italy can offer. Even being in touch with nature takes on a different, deeper meaning. Maybe it’s because of the memory of the bond St. Francis had with living creatures, but the air of mysticism and respect for every form of life seems to be passed on to every visitor who is enchanted by the wonderful scenery that surrounds the town.

It’s difficult to find things to say about Assisi that aren’t already known. Yet this Umbrian town has a history even older than St. Francis and St. Clare, perhaps less well known, but no less interesting. Everyone knows the most famous places in Assisi, such as the two superimposed basilicas dedicated to Francis, the patron saint of Italy, the church of S. Maria degli Angeli and the famous Porziuncola. But Assisi was already thriving in the Etruscan period, and later in Roman times. The Latin poet Propertius was born in Assisi. Right below the town square, hidden by the imposing medieval buildings, lies a Roman forum probably dating back to the first century BC. Not to be missed is the archaeological collection in the Civic Museum, now housed in the Chapel of St. Niccolò. The Temple of Minerva and the Amphitheatre also deserve a mention.

Of course there are plenty of events and Franciscan itineraries that retrace the steps of the lives of the two most illustrious natives of Assisi. The city buzzes with activity during major religious festivals, particularly at Easter and on Saint Francis’s feast day (October 4). Neither is there any lack of more touristic events in the form of historical pageants such as the calendimaggio (the May festival), during which a re-enactment takes place of the rivalry between the two factions of the city, or the Palio of San Rufino, with processions of drummers and flag throwers from the Assisi Company of Archers.
And for those looking for a different approach to spirituality, Assisi is home to the Ananda Yoga community, located on state road 444, between Assisi and Gualdo Tadino. There really is something for everyone.

Assisi and its surroundings await anyone seeking a holiday that will restore body and spirit. Whether you are Christians or not, your stay in the many agritourism farmhouses, bed and breakfasts and holiday homes will be a unique and unforgettable experience.
