Soups and catacombs relax and enjoy Tuscia

Lazio Itineraries: Soups and catacombs, relax and enjoy Tuscia.

The province of Viterbo, full of history and nature, is best known for the remains of its Etruscan civilization.
Catacombs, statues anπd decorations are found side by side with traces of subsequent Roman domination. Right now the towns in the Tuscia area are holding a number of events dedicated to local flavours and traditions. This friendly and relaxing historical area also provides the opportunity to visit towns and sites of archaeological importance.

Each January in the town of Monterosi the Pizzantiella Festival is held. The pizzantiella is a savoury crepe stuffed with local produce. The chefs’ stalls are put up in the town centre and the pizzantielle are prepared for the people who arrive, eagerly looking forward to a real crepe, but one in true Viterbo tradition.
The pizzantiella is usually a savoury crepe (but some people prefer a sweet one) stuffed with sausage, ham and cheese. As well as food, the festival also includes a procession, the launch of an air balloon, games and performances.
Half an hour away from Monterosi is the town of Vejano.

St. Orsio, Vejano’s patron saint, is remembered during the 'Soup Festival’. Orsio, a knight who suffered a series of misfortunes, began to wander around the Italian peninsula until, at the point of death, he reached Mount Sumano. The celebration of the saint began in Vejano centuries ago, and the soup, consisting of bread soaked in wine, is a reminder of the thirst he suffered. After the celebration a slice of bread-soaked wine is offered to the people present in the church square of Our Lady of Suffrage. The following day a procession is held in the streets of the town, and in the evening there is a firework display.

Also in Tuscia, halfway between Civita Castellana and Fabrica di Roma (about 20 kilometres from Monterosi), is the Falerii Novi archaeological site, the remains of a town that was discovered in the countryside. Founded by the Romans in 241 BC after the seizure of Falerii (present-day Civita Castellana), the surviving remains of the town can be visited today, an example of the first Roman conquests in Etruscan lands. Made from blocks of red tufa, the town walls are still perfectly preserved and extend for over 2,000 metres, with square towers and a moat to the east. The gateways into the town have religious significance and are of architectural interest. In addition to the town walls, parts of the theatre and the town’s streets can still be seen.
