Discover Teramo

Guide to vacation Teramo

Discover Teramo

Teramo is a very ancient city, originally a Phoenician colony called Petrut.
Teramo is surrounded by wonderful natural scenery such as the Gran Sasso Park, the della Laga mountains and the sea: a city full of green, blue and art.

Visit the 12th century cathedral in Teramo’s historic town centre, a symbol of the city’s importance in medieval times.
As you walk around Teramo, visit the Delfico Palace and the Bishop's Palace.
Among the churches of major interest are S.Domenico (XIV century) and the cathedral of S. Annacustode, built on the remains of a Roman house.
Also interesting is the archaeological site of a Roman amphitheatre and theatre dating from the Imperial period.

Teramo is a province of small towns where art combines with beautiful scenery. Civitella del Tronto is an example of a small historic city. Civitella del Tronto is divided into town and fortress. The fortress is impressive in size: in fact it’s about 25,000 square metres, one of the largest in Italy. The fortress has an elongated shape and almost mirrors the town. In Civitella del Tronto, visit the ‘Napoli’ port, the parish church of S. Lorenzo, the church of S. Francesco and the Ruetta, Italy’s narrowest street where only one person can pass at a time. In the past soldiers defending the fort used it to facilitate movement and in order to surprise the enemy.
Civitella del Tronto’s surroundings display all the scenic beauty of the Teramo province, such as Mount dei Fiori, Mount di Campli, the Salinello Gorges, the Sant'Angelo Cave and the Campovalano Plain, which contains one of the Italic populations’ major necropoles.

Pietracamela, situated in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, is another important town in the Teramo province. Forests surround the small town of Pietracamela. As with every location rich in nature and art, Pietracamela, and the province of Teramo generally, offers tasty products for the most discerning palates, such as good pecorino cheese, cold meats from the Abruzzo mountains, and to finish on a sweet note, delicious honey.
