Our country guest house was born from the transformation of the antique country complex of San Cristoforo, and still retains the typical charm of rural establishments in this angle of Umbria on the border with Tuscany, in the hills surrounding Lake Trasimeno.
“Pian di Marte Country House” is the ideal base for your central Italian itinerary. Halfway between Assisi and Siena, close to Perugia and Cortona, we are near the village of Passignano (one of the prettiest towns in the territory) yet situated in the absolute tranquility of the Umbrian countryside, surrounded by fields and forests.
In the 1500’s San Cristoforo was the parish church for the Pian di Marte valley. On this same site at the beginning of the 17th century a new church (now deconsecrated) was built along with the rectory. Over the years the other buildings that make up the complex were added: the country house, the drying shed for tobacco and other farm buildings. The country house and the tobacco building have been transformed into guest housing, with the classic farmhouse external staircase giving access to the two upper floors where there are 10 rooms, each with a private bathroom. The animal stalls and storage from the original ground floor barn are now a large common living room with an country fireplace that consists of 3 century old stonework, a small anteroom and a dining room.
Several of the additional farm buildings have been modernized to create individual guest rooms, each with independent entries, and two of them are equipped to accommodate handicapped guests. All the annex rooms have direct and independent outside access, so we can easily welcome guests with animals.
Your stay at our guest house includes breakfast, and restaurant service can be arranged for dinner (the classic “half pension”). For dinners, visitors have the option of our standard menu, or special local dishes (lake fish or eels from Lake Trasimeno, real “Fiorentina” -Florentine- beefsteak cooked on an open flame, and local “Pian di Marte” wild boar when in season!).
For groups a “full pension” menu can be arranged.
Our facility is family owned and operated, and we all live right here in the old rectory, so we can be fully available to meet all your needs during your stay.

Our Hilltop Retreat: First of all, you can enjoy the silence and tranquility of our hilltop location, with a panoramic 360° view of the surrounding countryside. Of course there is also our own property to enjoy, with large grassy areas for rest and relaxation, as well as a small wooded area for quite walks to the hidden fountain a few minutes away...
Country Cooking: Our country style kitchen is tied not only to the local cuisine but also to the particular personal history of our family origins. Each of us brings our own culinary traditions which we wish to transmit in their pure sense, but which also mix and combine with one another in delightfully innovative ways.
Our kitchen is country style in method and by design, using all natural ingredients and old fashioned techniques with the intention to find the middle ground between home cooking and a restaurant style that was once known as “country tavern” style. All the products are selected from local producers and the vast majority are from within walking distance of our home so it is possible for us to buy what we use directly from the local farms (this includes the meat and fish we prepare, fruits and vegetables, and olive oil and wine).
We offer you a complete daily menu, from antipasto to cakes and pastries, and we are ready to vary our menu to meet your dietary needs, including careful attention to any alimentary allergies. We also can provide a full vegetarian menu, and we are more than ready to listen to your needs and we are guarantee that we will listen to what you need.
Local wines are prominently represented in our small but well stocked wine cellar, especially the DOC wines of Trasimeno, with other unforgettable Umbrian wines, as well as select Tuscan vintages. This is especially important as Tuscany is only 8 kilometers from us!
“Pian di Marte Country House” is happily located in central Italy, between Tuscany and Umbria: Florence is to the North, Rome to the South, Siena to the West and Perugia to the East. The Pian di Marte Valley is between Lake Trasimeno, the beloved countryside of the famous painter Perugino and the largest regional park in Umbria, and the hills of the territory of Cortona, one of the most beautiful cities of Tuscany.
Within a two hour driving radius you will find at your disposition: art collections from ancient to Medieval, renaissance to baroque, contemporary and ultra modern. Also within easy reach are archaeological sites of primary importance from the Etruscan civilization, unique monuments, historical reenactments, evidence of cultures and ancient traditions and events of international importance, such as the classical musical festival Sagra Musicale Umbra, the Umbria Jazz Festival and the Tuscan Sun Festival.
It is easy and quick to get to Cortona and Siena, Perugia and the principal small cities of Umbria: Assisi, Spello, Gubbio, Orvieto, Todi, Spoleto, and Città della Piave.
In this part of central Italy there are also a huge variety of places to find typical local products, particularly enogastronomic delights. This includes the “wine trail through the hills of Trasimeno” and the world renowned wineries of Montepulciano and Montalcino.
In the territory around Lake Trasimeno it is possible to play golf, practice archery, windsurf kite-surf and sail, sky dive, take horseback riding lessons and go on guided horse tours, and take guided bike tours on the bike trails around Lake Trasimeno or follow one of the 16 bike itineraries that ring the lake.
For those who want to enjoy walking or who practice Nordic Walking there are also 16 itineraries to follow in the area surrounding the lake. All the trails are marked by standards recognized by the CAI (Club Alpino Italiano, or the Italian Alpine Club): and our country house is marked as the old “Saint Christopher Complex” as one of the sites of interest on Itinerary no. 10- Passignano - Poggio del Belveduto (13 Kilometers in length).
And please do not forget the wonderful shows put on in this region tied to folklore and legend: the Palio of Siena, the “Festa dei Ceri” of Gubbio, the Saracino Jousting tourney in Arezzo, and the Quintana Jousting Tourney at Foligno.
A last note: The name of our locations “Pian di Marte” is tied to the name of Hannibal. In the town of Tuoro you may visit the Permanent Documentation Center and Exhibit of the Battle of Lake Trasimeno, where Hannibal and his troops destroyed an entire Roman army.
