Discover Crotone
Guide to vacation Crotone
Crotone, looking out over the Ionian Sea, has always been a maritime city and the provincial capital since 1994.
In Crotone’s old town centre, pay a visit to
Piazza Castello with its beautiful buildings, among those of greatest importance are
Palazzo Morelli and Palazzo Barracco.
Walking through the narrow streets you come to
Piazza Pythagoras where the
Cathedral is located. Visitors who enjoy exploring characteristic corners should visit the neighbourhood known as the
"Pescheria".
Crotone and its province include the area that extends from the blue of the Ionian Sea to the green hills of Sila.
The areas of great interest to visitors are many, such as the
Isle of Caporizzuto, Cirò Marina, Trepidò and Cutro.
The
Isle of Caporizzuto has a wonderful castle rising from the sea. The castle stands on a peninsula with its wonderful 16th century architecture, built to combat the many invasions. In the town centre are the remains of the fortified 16th century complex,
Castello Feudale. It was built in the Middle Ages and expanded in 1549 by the Neapolitan feudal lord Giovanni Antonio Ricca.
In
Cirò, visit
the Saracens’ Markets, the old town centre and the Castle.
Cirò is famous for its wine, an excellent DOC certified wine distributed throughout Italy.
Trepidò is situated near Lake Ampollino, an artificial basin immersed in the uncontaminated nature of this area.
If you visit
Cutro, sample its excellent bread, which led to its nickname,
the “Calabria Granary”.
