The Province of Trapani, one of the few provinces in Sicily to offer a big variety in natural protected areas.

 

From the Agriturismo Vultaggio thanks to its location, you will get in a very short way to the most interesting of these natural reserves: the natural reserve of saltworks of Trapani and Paceco where some windmills protect one of the few damp protected area, a paradise for an avifauna rich of rare and half estincted species: Cavaliere of Italia, flamingoes, and Avocetta.

 

Not far away from the Agriturismo Vultaggio it is the natural protected area of Stagnone. This lagoon is famous thanks to the little island of Mothia, an important archaeological site of the ancient treasure back to the Phoenician Punic era in the VIII century bC.

 

Just in front of the Stagnone, a few miles from the coast there is the marine protected area of Egadi’s islands, a part of clear blue seawater, three ancient and evocative islands where myth meets history. Favignana, its incredible and peculiar tuff quarries that create an extremely unusual landscape; this island is famous for the Mattanza, tunnyfishig, every year by the end of May. Levanzo the right place to those who love quietness or want to know our roots, the paintings and graffitis inside the Grotta del genovese date back to the Paleolitic era. Marettimo, its mountain, the hardest and wildest among the three islands, the sacred island, Hiera, so called by the ancient Greeks.

 

The protected area of Zingaro, another possible destination, the first natural reserve in Sicily, a sacred temple for wildlife, a marvellous place borded with white gravelly creek and a blue green changing to cobalt blue seawater. 

The natural reserve of the river Belice, a place that calls back to Maghreb coasts, an uninterrupted interlacing of dunes slipping towards the seaboard, where the rare turtle Caretta Caretta lays its eggs.

 

For those who love historical archaeological routes, besides Mothia, they could visit two of the most strategic towns in the helim-punic era: Erice, a mix of myth and history, art and culture, fantasy and reality; and Segesta, its mythical temple and its magnificent theater.

 

Their rival: the greek Selinunte, a rich museum of civilization, a real ancient metropolis, with lots of temples, built up with the stones quarried in the Cave of Cusa.
