CORTONA AND THE CITIES OF TUSCANY AND UMBRIA
Cortona, the main town of the municipality is perched up on a hill at a towering height of 600 metres a.s.l. and offers a stunning view of the Valdichiana valley stretching at its feet, the mountains surrounding it and lake Trasimeno. The eye of the tourist coming to Cortona will be immediately caught by the commending
Etruscan City walls dating back to the late 5th century b.C. and surrounding the town in a rectangular shape for almost 2 miles.
Cortona attracts each year with its peculiar charm thousands of tourists wishing to visit the legacy of the ancient inhabitants of the town. Several tourists just fall in love with the town and choose it as their second home as have done a number of international V.I.Ps that especially in the summertime you won’t have a hard time running into in the town’s alleys and streets.
Cortona offers plenty of attractions: Etruscans, in particular, who made the town rich and important for centuries, have left behind significant historical evidence preserved in the local Museo dell’Accademia Etrusca (opening September 5 2005). There you’ll have a chance to see the famous “Etruscan Lamp” dating back to the 5th century b.C. or more recent findings such as the so called “Tabula Cortonensis” dating back to the 3rd century b.C. and identified as one of the most significant Etruscan written documents ever found in the ancient world.
You will be able to visit endless churches and palaces decorated with impressive frescoes and, of course, the wealth of antique shops, souvenir shops and small art galleries that dot the streets of this charming town. Worth visiting also all Etruscan tombs such as the Melone of Camucia, the Melone I and II of Sodo, the Tanella Angori the Grotta di Pitagora besids, of course the Museo Diocesano housing masterpieces by Luca Signorelli, Beato Angelico and Pietro Berrettini of Cortona.
In the summer several events take place in town amongst which the historical re-enactment of the Archidado (a crossbow shooting contest between the different quarters of the town taking place yearly in the first week of May) and the popular Steak Festival, unfolding in the local park on the evenings of August 14 and 15.
Do not forget that Cortona is located on right on the border between Tuscany and Umbria and that the farmhouse La Coccinella, thanks to its ideal location at the centre of the road network connecting the two regions will allow guests to reach all major art cities in less than one hour.
